Find out how you can support Wuqu’ Kawo with Antigua Fine Homes.
Wuqu’ Kawoq is a charitable nongovernmental organization working in rural areas of Guatemala to provide primary health care to indigenous Maya communities. We were founded in 2007 to correct a deficit in the ability of indigenous patients to access health care in their own languages. Currently, we provide services in Kaqchikel and K’ichee’ Maya to over 20,000 patients in over 10 municipalities.
One of Wuqu’ Kawoq’s primary areas of focus is the detection, prevention, and treatment of infant and child malnutrition. In the regions of Guatemala where we work, more than 70% of children under 5 are malnourished. We work to combat malnutrition by providing access to medical care, by education families and community leaders on the causes of malnutrition, and by supplementary feeding programs. Our innovative nutrition programs were recently featured on a ABC’s 20/20 news program.
At the same time, Wuqu’ Kawoq also provides full-service health care for children and adults suffering from chronic disease. We manage a large panel of patients suffering from complicated diseases, such as kidney failure, cancer, diabetes, and congenital heart disease. We accept referrals from other organizations with limited medical capacity and work to provide those patients with the same high-quality health care that our own patients receive.
