The mission of Seeds for a Future (Semillas Para el Futuro) is to create an integrated approach to helping people help themselves. Through education, leadership training and appropriate tools, people learn self-development while their cultural traditions, natural environment and social structures remain intact.

The goal of Seeds for a Future (Semillas Para al Futuro) is to help the Guatemalan town of Chocolá escape poverty not just today, but for generations. Our hope is that our approach will serve as a model for self-development in other poor rural communities in Guatemala and around the world.

 Our programs include:

• Growing Beyond Coffee - Chocolá's coffee cooperative of 750 families is not able to sustain itself with growing only coffee. The good news is that lower elevations are ideal for growing cacao, a stable crop in high demand.

• Cultivating Family Gardens - Damage by chickens, dogs and thundering rainstorms prevent families from growing nutritious vegetables for their families. The Family Garden Program provides education, seedlings,  nutritional information and simple green house structures to enable families to grow vegetables.

• Education - Our programs are providing the people of Chocolá with access to education: from preschool programs to the development of the library to creating audio-visual learning resources for those with poor reading skills.

• Preserving the Environment - Chocolá is rich in environmental diversity and history. Preservation of historical sites and efforts to stop deforestation are our number one priorities.
